Weco Reveals Denshi: The Future Power Supply At Sea... Turning Waves into Watts
Weco's new wave energy platform gives offshore sensors, communications equipment and monitoring systems continuous power - opening the door to a new generation of maritime and ocean monitoring. Small, mobile, agile units multi- domain capable, dual use and multi-functional.

Every piece of equipment or asset working offshore shares the same limitation: sooner or later, it runs out of power due to an empty battery or fuel tank. When the sun sets and sensors go dark, communication falls silent, a vessel has to go back out just to swap a battery, clean solar panels or refuel a generator. Dutch startup Weco has spent the past year building the answer to that challenge. This month, the company revealed Denshi, a compact wave energy platform that turns ocean motion into a continuous, fuel-free power supply for whatever needs to keep running at sea. Denshi is a dual use unit being multi-functional across domains and unmanned systems. It can operate as a network of uncrewed assets providing data collection, monitoring and enabling communication processes, surveillance activities at seas and sub-seas level.
Denshi works through a simple mechanical idea: as the buoy's floating body moves with the waves, that motion drives an internal generator through a rack-and-pinion system, producing continuous power with a guaranteed baseload even in modest sea states (Hs ≥ 0.3 m). At under 100 kg and just a meter across, it deploys from a small vessel in a short amount of time, on a single-point mooring, with no specialist installation vessel required. Built from marine grade materials like HDPE and stainless steel and engineered to withstand storm conditions, Denshi has already proven consistent uptime in open-sea trials on the North Sea and can carry LTE/4G/5G communications, onboard batteries and compute, with other communication methods available as an add-on.
"Denshi solves the constraint that quietly limits all autonomous offshore systems " said Cas van de Voort, Co founder of Weco. "Sensors, comms nodes, uncrewed vehicles and assets, the technologies keep getting better, but it's still constraint to a battery or fuel. Denshi removes that limit. It's a small piece of hardware that operates uncrewed, requires low effort to install and deploy but changes how long you can leave something running at sea, and how far from shore you can put it."
A dual-use platform, from security to the blue economy
Because Denshi is fundamentally a power and communications layer, it adapts to whatever payload rides on top of it — and Weco is already exploring that range on both sides of the civil-defence line. On the maritime security side, the company is collaborating to detect and classify (un)crewed underwater vehicles. When deployed in numbers, Denshi nodes can form mesh network for a persistent, low-logistics sensor and communications layer for critical underwater infrastructure protection, like subsea cable routes and collaborate on maritime security.
The same platform serves a very different market just as directly. For offshore wind operators, ecological researchers and other blue economy stakeholders, Denshi offers long-term, autonomous (environmental) monitoring platform without the recurring costs of maintenance trips.
What's next
Denshi is heading to REPMUS 2026, NATO's largest unmanned systems exercise in Portugal, where Weco will test the platform alongside crewed and uncrewed assets from other nations. For Weco, it's a step toward a broader shift: as more of the ocean's sensing, communication and surveillance work moves to small, distributed, autonomous, unmanned systems, the question stops being what those systems can do, and starts being how long they can keep doing it. Denshi is Weco's answer and the company sees it as the enabling layer under a new generation of ocean monitoring and surveillance that no longer has to choose between staying offshore and staying powered.
